Middle managers play one of the most important roles in any organisation. They connect senior leadership with the people delivering the work. They translate expectations, manage performance, support wellbeing, handle difficult conversations and keep teams moving.
That is a lot to carry.
Many managers step into the role with little formal development, particularly after being promoted for their technical expertise. They know the work and care about their team, but managing people requires a different set of skills.
Many managers step into the role after being promoted for their technical expertise, with little formal development in the people side of management.
This is where I can help.
I partner with organisations to develop middle managers who lead with more confidence, clarity and self-awareness, so they feel better equipped to support their people, manage performance and respond to the everyday challenges of leadership.
If you want to strengthen management capability across your organisation, let’s talk about the support your managers need.
Why middle manager development matters
When middle managers are unsupported, it can affect confidence, communication, performance and team wellbeing. Managers may avoid difficult conversations, expectations can become unclear, small issues may grow, and employees may not get the support, feedback or direction they need.
When managers are well supported, the impact is felt across the organisation. They communicate more clearly, hold better 1:1 conversations, build stronger relationships, manage boundaries more effectively and feel more confident leading their teams.
Good management is not about having all the answers. It is about having the confidence, awareness and tools to lead people well.
How I support your managers
I combine experience in HR, coaching, facilitation and DISC behavioural profiling to create learning that is practical, relatable and grounded in real workplace situations.
My style is warm, honest and supportive. I do not believe in overcomplicating leadership development. Managers need space to think, tools they can use and conversations that help them understand themselves and the people they lead.
I support organisations through:
1:1 middle manager coaching
Helping managers build confidence, reflect on real situations and strengthen their leadership style.
Practical workshops and courses
Interactive sessions focused on the real challenges managers face day to day.
Team development using DISC
Helping teams understand communication styles, behaviour preferences and how to work better together.
Middle Manager coaching
Middle managers often hold everyone else together.
They support their team, respond to senior leadership, manage expectations and navigate difficult situations, all while keeping work moving. For managers who care deeply about doing a good job, that responsibility can feel isolating.
Coaching gives managers a confidential space to pause, reflect and think clearly.
I work with managers to help them:
- Build confidence in their role
- Strengthen leadership and communication skills
- Prepare for difficult conversations
- Improve boundaries and manage expectations
- Understand their own leadership style
- Support others without losing themselves
- Move from reacting to leading with intention

Sessions can be delivered online or, depending on location, in person. They last up to 60 minutes and are usually held monthly or fortnightly. A minimum programme of six sessions is recommended.
If you feel 1 or more managers would benefit from working with me, let’s arrange a suitable time to discuss by emailing me at louise@louisemcmilan.co.uk

Workshops can be delivered online or in person and tailored to your organisation’s priorities, your managers’ experience and the challenges they are currently facing.
If you have a particular need in these areas, feel free to reach out and let us talk through how I can support you and your organisation.
Team Development using DISC
Every team is made up of different personalities, communication styles and behavioural preferences.
That is a strength, but it can also create misunderstanding when people do not understand how others work best.
Using DISC behavioural profiling, I help teams explore communication preferences and gain a deeper understanding of themselves and each other. The 4 styles of DISC are Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance. We all have an element of all the styles within us, however, have a stronger preference for one.
Team development sessions can help people:
- Understand their own preferred style
- Recognise the strengths and needs of others
- Improve communication across the team
- Build trust and psychological safety
- Reduce misunderstandings and assumptions
- Strengthen collaboration and respect
- Create practical actions for working better together
DISC is particularly useful for leadership teams, newly formed teams, teams experiencing change, or teams wanting to communicate and collaborate more effectively.

Ready to support your managers?
If your managers are carrying more than anyone realises, or you know they would benefit from practical, human-centred development, I would love to talk.
Let’s discuss your organisation, the challenges your managers are facing and the right blend of coaching, workshops or team development for your people.
Louise was excellent, delivering the course in a manner that suited our organisation. Louise was able to provide lots of real-life examples that helped various team members.
Working with Louise we were able to ensure that the programme covered the key topics for our organisation and the feedback that we received afterwards highlighted that the practical examples were of particular use to our managers.
Throughout the sessions we were all made to feel involved and supported and Louise provided opportunities for both feedback but also catch ups on an individual basis if that was required
Louise brought the group together in such a wonderful way for group coaching. There was an immediate perfect balance of curiosity, vulnerability and drive to learn more about ourselves, one another and as a group. We still talk about it and reference it months later during conversations and meetings.
I had the great pleasure of recently attending Louise’s session on goal setting. Even though it was delivered online, it still had the same level of immersion, warmth & support that you always get from being with Lou ‘in person’. Her delivery was impeccable & I learned a lot about her way of setting & achieving goals. I highly recommend Lou’s coaching – not only because she is a great coach – but also one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure to meet!
Louise is a genuine business asset. She bridges the gap between the business need and that of the employee, ensuring successful outcomes. She finds the time to get to know employees individually and will coach them to ensure they achieve their full potential. Louise is personable, approachable professional that cares.
